Baptism is the sacrament by which we are born again of water and the Holy Spirit, by which we receive in a new and spiritual life, the dignity of adoption as sons and daughters of the God and heirs to the kingdom of God.
For Parents and Godparents:
When a baby is brought for Baptism, the first and primary sacrament, it is the parents and godparents who must give assurances that the grace that God imparts in the sacrament will be lived and that the child will be brought up in the practice of the Faith. This means going to Mass and learning about the Faith. It is for this reason that the Church takes the preparation of parents and godparents very seriously. The preparation is not to celebrate the liturgy of baptism, although it is a reason to celebrate but to understand the consequences of the baby receiving the sacrament.
